Alcohol and Other Drugs Policy
is required to be in compliance with the Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act, as mandated by the Department of Education (DoEd). The policy is based on a manual produced by the DoEd to assist higher education institutions with compliance with this act.
Drug, Alcohol, and Tobacco-Free Campus
It is APU Global’s policy to make every effort to provide and maintain a drug-free campus and workplace.
Scope of the policy
APU Global maintains a drug, alcohol, and tobacco-free environment in compliance with the Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act and the Drug-Free Workplace Act. The policy applies to students, faculty, and staff engaged in university activities, including online coursework, university-sponsored events, and any in-person fieldwork or clinical placement associated with a program.
Standards of conduct
- Unlawful possession, use, or distribution of controlled substances is prohibited
- Alcohol use is prohibited at university functions and during university-sponsored activity
- Tobacco use is prohibited at university facilities and events
- Violations may result in disciplinary action up to dismissal and referral to law enforcement
Prevention and education
Federal law requires more than a written prohibition. APU Global provides students and employees with information about the health risks associated with substance use, applicable legal sanctions under local, state, and federal law, and the counseling and treatment resources available to them.
Because APU Global students study across many states, referrals are made to community and telehealth providers where the student lives, along with national helplines. Chaplaincy and student support staff can help a student find care confidentially and remain enrolled where that is feasible.
