Benefit options for military students

Military-connected students often combine several funding sources. Understanding how they interact, and in what order they should be applied, can significantly reduce or eliminate out-of-pocket cost.

  • Post-9/11 GI Bill® and Montgomery GI Bill® education benefits

  • Tuition Assistance (TA) for active duty service members

  • Top-Up benefits to cover the gap TA does not pay

  • Yellow Ribbon Program participation

  • Chapter 35 Dependents' Educational Assistance and MyCAA for spouses

  • Federal aid, state grants, and institutional scholarships

Using Top-Up Benefits

Using Top-Up benefits may be an option if you plan to use tuition assistance (TA) to complete a degree program while on active duty, and don’t plan to continue your education after service. Top-up can also be helpful for just taking a few courses with TA while on active duty; then you can save most of your GI Bill benefits for after service to complete your education program.

Before you calculate cost

Credit for military training

Before you calculate cost, calculate credit. Training documented on a Joint Services Transcript frequently converts to college credit, and prior learning assessment can add up to 30 credits. Fewer courses required is the largest single reduction in total cost.
